В игре принимает участие до 10 игроков (в неофициальных версиях карты больше), по 5 в каждой команде. Перед началом игры каждый игрок должен выбрать себе понравившегося героя и вместе со своими партнерами по команде разрушить вражескую базу. Дота 1 является необычной стратегией, так как она содержит в себе большое количество элементов ролевой игры. Во время игры герои набираются опыта и получают золото за убийство вражеских существ. Опыт можно потратить на изучение какого-нибудь навыка, а золото на приобретение артефакта. Со временем у игры (или правильнее сказать модификации) появилось большое количество поклонников по всему миру. Игроки стали выпускать различные варианты карты, дополнения, «фиксить» баги, а также обучающие гайды по предметам и героям. Почитать гайды по доте 1 можно здесь. На данный момент в игре 112 различных героев, обладающих уникальными характеристиками и способностями. Все герои в доте 1 делятся на 3 класса: силачи, ловкачи и маги. Каждый герой определенного класса может быть более или менее эффективен в определенной ситуации.
Самое важной в Доте — это, конечно же, слаженная работа команды. В очень редких случаях игрок может вытащить победу в одиночку, и то, при условии что игроки из вражеской команды будут очень слабыми. Немаловажную роль играет и правильная сборка предметов. Обязательно нужно смотреть в инвентарь своих союзников и соперников и подбирать предметы в зависимости от ситуации.
В целом Dota является простой игрой, но из-за наличия огромного количества героев, артефактов, рецептов, а также юнитов может показатся начинающему игроку сложной. На первое время кажется, что привыкнуть к игровому процессу очень трудно, особенно из-за большего количества артефактов и вариантов сборок. Поэтому любителями начали создаваться специальные карты с искусственным интеллектом, чтобы новички могли для начала потренироваться с компьютером.
